There is something idyllic about this quaint town. SURVIVE THE RAFT

Discovery

Max

We enjoy a good reality competition show that shifts the social experimentation paradigm! The premise of Survive the Raft is inspired by the 1973 Acali Experiment by Mexican anthropologist, Santiago Genovés. He curated a group of people from varying backgrounds to see how they would come together, live, work, and accomplish goals. The experiment had a lot of conflict and tensions.

With this experiment and the studies that resulted from it, this competition builds on that and is hosted by Nate Boyer (US Army Green Beret, NFL Seattle Seahawks, Mayans MC) who announces the challenges to the contestants who live on the raft and work together in order to win money for the group. The contestants do a series of challenges, navigate conflicts and even have opportunities to win money for themselves without the group knowing or to stay true to the assignment to build the pot for everyone to share equally. It's a game of the ultimate believe in unity as well as questioning whether those you came in with should stay or be swapped with those that are a better fit!

Throughout the pandemic, we enjoyed listening to podcasts that talked about wealthy individuals who decided to create treasure hunts around the world. Inevitably, there are clues, it creates havoc as people go to the extreme to find them, and the results can be less than expected.

In X Marks the Spot: The Legend of Forrest Fenn, we get to hear about Forrest Fenn's backstory, a wealthy man who believes he will die soon and decides to create a treasure hunt. We get to hear about his process in creating the clues and eventually finding that he in fact is not dying as soon as thought - but he continues to allow the game to be played.

Although he doesn't give hints to those who are playing, from time to time he does clarify certain points. Although Forrest is dead now, we get a breakdown on what the clues mean, those who felt that they had found or almost found the treasure as well as hearing about those who begged for the game to stop due to safety issues! This true story is one that is a great listen and allows you to interpret what it woudl mean if you had the opportunity to go on this quest.

BEANIE MANIA

HBO Max

Many of us remember when Beanie Babies became the most collectible item. Out of nowhere, these stuffed animals known as Beanies were found in a number of gift shops and stores in your town. Growing up, you even knew that your parents or other elders were collecting them.

Beanie Mania goes behind this craze to share how the company came into existence, how it grew slowly and how a group of Midwestern women began driving value and interest to this toy and how it became something where people felt that they literally would become millionaires.

We learn about how the company with a handful of employees went from having a product, to giving it life with the poems, names of the Beanies and having a non-traditional distribution.

Ultimately, greed, undervaluing employees and additional issues began to be the undoing of the millionaire dreams that many had. It also looks at how there is a resurgence of these toys and interests as younger generations have been gifted the toys.
